14th February 2011 - The Stand, 333 Woodlands Road, G3 6NG
Well, the 14th of February 2011 was definitely a Valentines night to remember. For Robert and for us all.
Our secret special guest compere Kevin Bridges kicked off the night to a sell-out crowd of around 200 people - and our main man delivered an unbelievable line-up of Scottish comic talent.
Gary Little started the night off for us with some amusing tales of internet dating. Check out the big mans 'Pure Tonto' show (April 2nd at Glasgow's The Garage) during the comedy festival this Spring. The big chap guarantees laughs.
Next up was The Reverend Obadiah Steppenwolfe III with his usual mix of close to the bone chaos and prickly preaching. As Kevin explained, charity nights can be made just that little bit more edgy by throwing in a 'live hand grenade'. And the Rev certainly exploded.
Following The Rev, Antony Murray took to the stage for some tales in a self-deprecating fashion - Antony's One Prick Tony show features in Glasgow's Comedy Festival at Capitol on April 9th. This guy is a must for fans of deadpan delivery.
The first surprise guest of the evening was BBC Scotland's very own Gary Tank Commander. Gary helpfully explained why we went to war in Iraq - and the lack of cheesy pasta in his local Co-op. Very funny indeed.
Tollcross born and bred Raymond Mearns was our headline act, and he quickly had us all in stitches with his observations on drinking, watching TV and performing in the bedroom - the key elements of being a Glaswegian man. Raymond's April Fool show features at the 02 ABC this April 1st.
Kevin Bridges also held an auction with some great prizes he kindly donated. A Gary Tank Commander signed DVD raised £45, both Kevin Bridges signed DVDs went for £65. A signed Rangers top was snapped up by Kevin himself for £150 - and kindly handed over to Robert. £300 was the winning price for a signed Celtic shirt from all the team - thanks very much to Celtic manager Neil Lennon who came to our event and donated the shirt.
After all that, the night ended in spectacular fashion with the arrival of John Bishop, straight from a sell-out performance at the SECC armadillo. John kindly donated a signed Liverpool shirt and gave us a laugh telling us how he secured it from Kenny Dalglish. Neil Lennon made a winning bid of £500 for the shirt to the end the night on a high. Catch John Bishops show on March 22nd.
With arguably the two biggest comedy acts in the UK on stage for the finale (both topped the comedy DVD charts this Christmas) Rab's Fund had another amazing night. - We managed a total of £3,840 in ticket sales, and £1,125 raised through the auction.
Thanks to all the kind staff at The Stand and all our amazing comic acts, especially Kevin who organised all the prizes and invited all the comedy talent. This really was a dream come true event.
